Newborn and baby photography

Ah, the sweet scent of a newborn, the tiny fingers and toes, the peaceful slumber—it’s a fleeting moment that many parents understandably want to capture and cherish forever. That’s where the art of newborn photography comes in. More than just taking pictures, it’s about creating timeless memories of those precious first few weeks of life.

The Magic of Those Early Days

The window for classic newborn photography, often featuring those curled-up, sleepy poses, is typically within the first two weeks after birth. During this time, babies are still very flexible and tend to sleep deeply, making it easier to gently position them. Of course, capturing a newborn at any stage is special, and lifestyle newborn sessions, which focus on natural interactions within the family home, are also incredibly popular.

More Than Just a Snapshot: The Artistry Involved

A skilled newborn photographer brings a unique blend of artistry and technical expertise to the session. Safety is paramount, and they are trained in how to handle and pose newborns gently and securely. They understand the importance of a comfortable environment, often keeping the studio warm and using white noise to soothe the baby.

Beyond safety, there’s the artistic eye. Photographers carefully consider lighting, composition, and props to create beautiful and evocative images. They have a knack for capturing those tiny details – the delicate curve of an ear, the soft downy hair, the tiny wrinkles on their feet—that often fade so quickly.

Choosing the Right Photographer

When selecting a newborn photographer, there are several factors to consider:

  • Safety: This should be your top priority. Seek a photographer who has received specific training in newborn posing and safety techniques. Don’t hesitate to ask about their experience and protocols.
  • Style: Browse their portfolio to ensure their aesthetic aligns with your vision. Do you prefer posed studio shots or natural lifestyle images?
  • Experience: An experienced newborn photographer will be comfortable handling babies and will know how to work efficiently, especially when dealing with unpredictable little ones.
  • Reviews and Recommendations: Check online reviews and ask for recommendations from friends or family.
  • Packages and Pricing: Understand what’s included in their packages and ensure it fits your budget.

Preparing for Your Newborn Photography Session

While your photographer will guide you through the process, there are a few things you can do to prepare:

  • Book in Advance: Newborn photographers often book up months ahead, so it’s best to inquire during your pregnancy.
  • Keep Baby Awake Before: Try to keep your baby awake for a little while before the session to encourage a deep sleep during the shoot.
  • Feed Baby Before: A full and content baby is a joyful baby! Plan to feed your little one right before you leave for the studio or upon arrival.
  • Pack Essentials: Bring extra diapers, wipes, formula or breast milk, and any comfort items your baby might need.
  • Relax and Trust Your Photographer: They are the experts! Try to relax and enjoy the process.

A Lasting Treasure

Investing in newborn photography is investing in a precious keepsake. These images will serve as a beautiful reminder of those fleeting early days, a time of pure innocence and wonder. They are photographs that you and your child will cherish for a lifetime. So, if you’re expecting a little one, consider capturing this magical time—you won’t regret it.

I am a studio newborn and natural light photographer born and raised in Belgium! I fell in love with photography in school when I was able to take a few different classes in film and digital. I was never able to find time for photography during those years, but I am thankful for what I learned and how I can apply it to my business.

Being able to capture your memories from maternity sessions to newborn sessions, milestone sessions, yearly family sessions, senior sessions, and beyond is what I absolutely love about this job as a photographer. I’m so grateful to see your family grow and build a relationship with you.

I can’t wait to learn more about you, and if you want to know me better, you can follow me on Facebook and Instagram to see my latest work and my crazy daily life!
